Well first things first – a hearty congratulations to the guys in Rok.Ink for a mighty fine performance on Sunday. A shame they didn’t win the competition, but a main stage slot at M-Fest is a good consolation! Well done!
And as for the photos, I’m very happy with them and hopefully the guys will be too.
I’ve tried to concentrate in balancing the performance elements with the lighting and atmosphere and I think that despite the brightness of the background (a window with blinds closed that bled light very easily!) I’m mostly happy with the results.
Given another chance and some input I’d certainly get a large black backdrop sheet behind the drummer to stop this light bleed. This would have darkened the whole stage area, making the lighting on stage even more effective and my job easier despite meaning increased ISO settings.
Mostly shot on a wide open Nikon 50mm f/1.8, I still had to push the ISO up to at least 3200 to get fast enough shutter speeds to freeze the action. Thank goodness for the impressive noise handling of Nikon cameras!
Right that’s enough for now.
